3 Ball Respiratory Exerciser – Lungs Exercise Ball for Better Breathing

The 3 Ball Respiratory Exerciser, also called a lungs exercise ball or three ball spirometer, is a simple breathing device that helps you strengthen your lungs and practise deep breathing. It is widely used after surgery, during recovery from chest or lung conditions, and by people who spend long periods in bed. It suits hospital wards, physiotherapy clinics and home care. It has a transparent chamber with three coloured balls, a flexible breathing tube and a mouthpiece. It is usually made of lightweight, durable medical-grade plastic such as ABS or PVC. The clear body lets you see your progress with every breath.

Using this 3 ball spirometer is easy. You breathe in slowly and deeply through the mouthpiece, and the balls rise one by one to show how strong your inhalation is. The three chambers are typically marked for airflow levels of 600, 900 and 1200 cc/sec, so you can start gently and build up over time. The device is compact, portable, reusable and needs no batteries or electricity. It is a practical daily habit for lung recovery at home or in a hospital.

How to Use a Lungs Exercise Ball

Sit upright on a chair or bed, and keep the device upright.
Breathe out normally, then place the mouthpiece in your mouth and seal your lips around it.
Inhale slowly and deeply. Try to raise the first ball, and then the second and third as you improve.
Hold your breath for 2–3 seconds if comfortable, keeping the balls raised.
Remove the mouthpiece and breathe out normally.
Rest for a few breaths, then repeat 8–10 times, or as advised by your doctor or physiotherapist.
Clean the mouthpiece after use and store the device in a dry place.

3 Ball Spirometer Normal Range: What to Know

The balls on a three ball spirometer show your inhalation flow rate (about 600, 900 and 1200 cc/sec) and not your total lung capacity. There is no single "normal range" for everyone, because it depends on age, health, height and recovery stage. Beginners and post-surgery patients often start by lifting the first ball, then work towards the second and third. Your doctor can tell you the right target for you.
